It’s no secret that Apple has been exploring the potential of its AirPods when it comes to health and hearing. Now, we have more information on its progress in this area. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch new health features for AirPods in the near future.
The report mentions that the new health features for AirPods could include the ability to get hearing data of some sort. However, as of now, the only health feature offered by AirPods is Live Listen, which was introduced in iOS 12 in 2018. Live Listen essentially turns an iPhone into a directional microphone, transmitting audio from the iPhone to AirPods in real time. Yet, the feature is not currently approved by the FDA, which could be necessary for the hearing data feature to become a thing.
This speculation is in line with Apple executive Kevin Lynch’s statements from 2021 in which he acknowledged the potential health applications of AirPods. With the company’s ambitious goal of making health a major focus of its next big initiatives, it’s fair to expect that the AirPods will be a major part of this effort.
It will be interesting to see what kinds of health features Apple ultimately releases for the AirPods. However, one thing is for sure – Apple’s commitment to advancing its audio products for health purposes is a promising development. If successful, the AirPods could prove to be a powerful tool for potentially tens of millions of people.
