Apple is making an incredible change to the way it services repairs for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Starting this week, its Genius Bars at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers are now able to repair Face ID and TrueDepth issues without the need to replace the entire iPhone. This news comes from an internal memo, seen by 9to5Mac.
The TrueDepth Camera module houses all the components for Face ID and the front camera. Should any of these parts fail, the entire iPhone would need to be replaced as Apple hadn’t developed a way to fix the module.
Apple started same-unit repairs of the TrueDepth module on the iPhone XS and newer last year. However, with the latest release of the iPhone 14 series, it took Apple several months to set up the infrastructure to support the same-unit repairs for the TrueDepth Camera module.
A memo was issued to the employees this week that reinforced the same-unit repairs are available for the TrueDepth Camera module on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This means that if any part of the module, such as Face ID, fails, Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers can now replace only that component and not the device.
Though, Apple does explain that same-unit repairs are not always the best option, so their employees should always follow the guidance given by Apple Service Toolkit 2 diagnostics system. Sadly, the same-unit repair option for the TrueDepth Camera is not currently available for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Nevertheless, Apple will inform their teams when this is available.
This action shows Apple’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its ongoing effort to give its products a longer life. It is also highly beneficial to its customers as it saves them the cost of having to purchase a new iPhone and spares them the inconvenience of having to find a way to set up their phone once again.
